Digital Services Technician Keenan discusses his education epiphany, advanced computer networking and the role of the digital team in a wider organisation…

Working in digital can go from being silent to chaotic within minutes. You never quite know what will happen in any given day, which certainly makes my role interesting!

I’ve always had an interest in technology. From a young age I was always drawn to technology of different kinds, so pursuing it as a career just made sense.

I was so convinced of this that I made the decision to leave college prematurely and pursue an apprenticeship that was focussed on working in the digital space. It was a decision I didn’t take lightly but I felt that further full-time education wasn’t for me and didn’t enable me to pursue the career that I wanted.

The first step was to gain a further qualification specifically around IT, which I achieved through an online course ‘Level 3 Information Communications Technician’. I passed with ‘distinction’ and soon afterwards applied for the role of Digital Services Apprentice at Squared.

I’ve since been made Digital Services Technician and am part of the Digital team at Squared. We’re responsible for ensuring the team are equipped with the digital tools they need, from hardware such as computers to work phones through to software.

My role also requires me to respond to any live issues, helping to fix faults and implement digital solutions to save team members time and improve efficiency. This can be anything from ‘how do I do this’ to ‘my computer has stopped working’, sometimes at the same time! You never quite know what will come but knowing that serious issues can impact and delay the wider team from their work, which can then affect our services and therefore our customers. That means it’s important to resolve digital issues as quickly as possible.

I work across different sites, supporting not only team members with their equipment but also helping to monitor CCTV cameras at projects and door entry systems to certain sites. I also get involved with potential new technology or developments, trialling new solutions and software to see if they can be of benefit to Squared.

I’m really interested in advanced computer networking, which I like to study in my downtime. Though I do find ways to switch off too! I often turn to music, sports or exercise science for that.

Squared provided me an opportunity to begin my career in IT. Squared are an organisation of opportunity, whether that’s career opportunities or housing opportunities for customers. Working in a team that is so dedicated to combating homelessness and inspire lives is, well, inspirational! An organisation with a clear purpose striving to help people in their community, what more could you ask for!
