As part of our role providing homes for local people, we want to inform our customers about specific ways that you can look after your property while making you aware of specific issues that you need to be aware of. In this feature we're going to discuss Legionella.

Legionella bacteria can be found in your hot and cold water system and lead to serious illness if pre-cautions are not taken. Every year in England and Wales their are around 200-250 reported confirmed cases of Legionella, so it's really important to be aware of this and take steps to avoid this in your home.

You can follow a few simple steps to keep safe from Legionella:

  • If you have a shower, clean the showerhead periodically and de-scale it
  • If any water coming from your taps is dis-coloured, please contact the maintenance team
  • If you’re not getting hot water or if your cold water is warm, please contact the maintenance team
  • Ensure that the water in the system is circulated regularly

If you have any questions around legionella, please contact either your Housing Officer or the Maintenance department.
